Andrew Luff took up his post as Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at Southampton Eye Unit in 1995. Having qualified from Oxford University and Guys Hospital, he trained initially as a general surgeon, moving to Ophthalmology in 1988. He spent two years in Fellowship training at Moorfields Eye Hospital before returning to Southampton as a Consultant.
Andrew’s main areas of interest are cataract surgery, vitreoretinal surgery and age-related macular degeneration. Andrew has performed intravitreal injections for the treatment of wet age-related macular degeneration since November 2005.
Andrew has recently started a new and exciting surgical procedure using the VIP-IOL Telescopic Lens for patients with age-related macular degeneration. The IOL-VIP procedure is similar to standard cataract surgery, but involves the implantation of one lens behind the iris and a second in front. The lens behind the iris is a minifying glass (thick at the edges) and the lens in front of the iris is a magnifying glass (thick in the middle). The combination of these two lenses produces a larger image on the retina and thus a “telescopic” effect.
In the evolving practice of presbyopia surgery, he specialises in multifocal and accommodating lenses. Andrew offers Near Vision Conductive Keratoplasty for enhanced reading vision. For further information on Near Vision CK, please go to the Refractec website at precisionlens.net.
Private patients are offered surgery at Spire Southampton Hospital or the Wessex Nuffield Hospital. In addition, intravitreal therapies and Conductive Keratoplasty are carried out at the Highcliffe Medical Centre.
